After our days in Vang Vieng, we continued north towards Nong Khiaw. A completely different side of Laos was waiting for us here. While Vang Vieng is better known for its activities and backpacker scene, Nong Khiaw felt much quieter and more remote.
The first thing you notice in Nong Khiaw is the mountains. Tall limestone mountains surround the small town and make the landscape feel almost like a huge natural amphitheatre. The river runs through the area and together with the mountains creates a fantastic setting.
Nong Khiaw was one of the stops on the trip where we could really slow down. There is not as much traffic or large numbers of tourists, which made the atmosphere feel very relaxed.
One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Nong Khiaw was the viewpoints. There are several viewpoints around the town where you can hike up into the mountains and get incredible views of the entire area.
The hike up to a viewpoint can be quite challenging. It is steep in some places and you should expect to get pretty sweaty. But once you reach the top, almost all the tiredness disappears when you see the view.
From the top you can see the river winding through the valley and the green mountains stretching in every direction. It is the kind of view that makes you want to stay for a long time and simply take it all in.
Sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful here. If you are willing to get up early, I really recommend watching the sunrise from one of the viewpoints. Standing on the mountain while the sun slowly lights up the valley was one of the best experiences of the trip.
During the days, we also took the opportunity to explore the area around Nong Khiaw. There are small villages, hiking trails, caves and different nature experiences nearby.
Another experience I recommend is going out on the river. The river is a major part of life here, and from the water you get a completely different perspective of the mountains.
It is also very nice to simply walk around Nong Khiaw. Since the area is quite small, you can easily get around and discover small restaurants, cafés and local shops.
Something I really appreciated was the peaceful atmosphere in the evenings. After a day of hiking, it was nice to sit down, have dinner and look out over the mountains.
Nong Khiaw is therefore a great destination for anyone who wants to get away from the larger tourist destinations. It is not the place to go if you want a big nightlife scene or lots of shopping. You come here for the nature, tranquility and hiking.
For anyone who enjoys photography, Nong Khiaw is also a really great stop. The combination of the river, mountains, small villages and changing light means that you can almost always find something to photograph.
I also think Nong Khiaw is a great place to simply slow down during a longer trip. After visiting many cities and doing lots of activities, it can be nice to have a few days where you do not need to do anything special.
After our days among the mountains in Nong Khiaw, it was time to continue. The next stop was Luang Prabang, one of Laos' most famous cities and a place where we would experience even more history, culture, temples and Lao food.
These are my favourites from Nong Khiaw
I recommend staying close to the river and town centre. This makes it easy to reach restaurants, cafés, hiking trails and boat trips.

We continued travelling north from Vang Vieng towards Nong Khiaw. The journey took us through increasingly mountainous landscapes and it was clear that we were getting further away from the larger tourist destinations.

Bring good shoes and water if you plan to hike. Some trails are much steeper than they initially appear.
